Monday ~ Clap if You Believe in Fairies

Fairies. Mermaids. Dwarves. Unicorns. Sprites. Fawns. Elves.

In other words, fantasy.

I grew up on all seven of the Chronicles of Narnia, where magic wardrobes, duffle-puds and talking beasts were the setting. My favorite childhood book is an extremely obscure and little known one called "The Forbidden Door," by Jeanne K. Norweb - in which two children, in a very Narnia-esque story, find a door in a sea cave that leads into a land of dragons.

{ happy Monday! Note: let me know if I post to many photos of myself! I like seeing photos of the authors of the blogs I read, so that's why I post photos of myself. But I don't want to look vain, so holla' if it gets to "selfie" around here }

Whether it's been re-tellings of classic fairy-tales, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the almost countless Redwall books, or in more recent years, Percy Jackson, as well as the Harry, Ron & Hermione trio ...I've always had a bent towards the fantasy genre.

And so here's my silly Monday confession: even though I'm a grown-up now, there's still so much of me that wishes that fairy-tale stuff really happened. You know...that there really was magic in the air, wooden staffs that shot out light at just the right moment or fairies that flew in to help those in need. I wish I could catch a glimpse of a mermaid basking on a rock or the swooping wings of a dragon as it glided behind a cloud. I wish that there were little mice and woodland creatures who I could talk to or centaurs who'd teach me how to ride.

But of course, there's not.

*moment of silence*

But! I'll always be a dreamer. And I'll always love me some pixie-dust and magic moonbeams. And I'll always wish that I could be the next earthling to find that magic portal to another world. True story.

{ the black heals that have stood me (literally) through three different bridesmaid experiences // my Sunday outfit as I was about to head out the door }

But for now, as I was entertaining all these thoughts of fun, fantastic whimsy in my mind this morning, I got to thinking this question to myself, and I decided to ask the question to you.

Just for fun. Because there's a little bit of dreamer in all of us. And you know it.

If you could bring to life one magical, fantastical creature or persons, which would you choose?

Leave a comment with your choice! And any fantasy/make-believe book or movie favorites you have! I really want to know!

  2. Three things:
    1. I don't believe you have too many pictures of yourself on this blog. I quite enjoy seeing you here and there :)
    2. Love the outfit and the heels! Lookin good ;)
    3. I totally agree/relate to this post. There's other people out there that think like me, ha! And, as you probably already guessed, if I could bring one creature to life it would (of course) be the dragon. They're just so magnificent and noble and scary :)

    1. Hehe, Brea, I knew you'd say dragons! You came to mind several times while composing this post, since I knew you'd be a kindred with me on this! *sigh* If only it was all real...

  3. Having never met you, my beauteous heart-friend, in person--I absolutely adore all your pictures. And they inspire me to want to find batteries for my camera & take some...but my sister makes fun of my attempts at photography/selfies. ;) LOL
Uhm...as far as fanatastical persons/creatures, could I just bring to life Beauty & the Beast? LOL I do so love fairy-tales...but fantasy has never intrigued me much as I grew up, much less now, with the exception of classic fairy tales. Now HISTORY, however--if you asked me if I could spend one day with any great person from history, I couldn't answer that! LOL I'd have to write a lengthy list. ;)
Love ya, gral! P.S: you should have a lengthy letter in your inbox! <3

And I read your email last night and already mentally rehearsing my reply! Which shall hopefully be a lot quicker in the delivery than the last one. ;)

I would want a little talking animal friend or a faerie, can't decide which! =)

Nope, there aren't to many pics, I love seeing your happy smiling self!

As for fantasy books and movies, where does one begin!

Books: Anything written by Robin McKinley, Tamera Pierce or Gail Carson Levine as they are by far my favorite fantasy authors! Oh and Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series if you're looking for 13 or so 600-800 page long books to get obsessed with!

Movies: Labyrinth, Brothers Grimm and Roger and Hammersteins Cinderella (A made for TV version with Brandy as Cinderella, I just love her voice and hair to pieces!)

    1. Having talking animal friend would be so wonderful! I've often wanted to be able to talk to my precious cats! :D

Ooh! I'm going to refer back to this lovely list of possibilities! I've read a lot of Robin McKinley's books (BEAUTY!!), but none of the other people you mentioned! Must get to it! I'll also check out those movies, too! :D

  5. I used to make fairy houses on the playground in elementary school. I am pretty sure we honestly believed in fairies at that point in our lives. :)

Do you watch Once Upon a Time on ABC? Seems like a tv show you might get into...I like it a lot. :) I wish a lot of the fairy tales were real life...call me girly, but I loveeee princesses!

    1. Angela-friend, I am RIGHT there with you!! I still LOVE princesses, specifically of the Disney variety! I admit to keeping my eye out for finding the perfect "Belle" figurine for my key-chain!! There's just something so pretty about fairy-tales, princesses and magical places in general!

And oh yes! I am definitely into Once Upon a Time! One of my favorite shows! I think my favorite character is Ruby/Red Riding Hood. She's bold and she makes a statement...but she's sweet, kind and fiercely loyal. And I'm still waiting for August/Pinocchio to come back into the scene! (I'm a couple of episodes behind, so I haven't gotten there yet!).

    1. Ah, Narnia! I love that place! I grew up on the old BBC movies (and I'll defend them to the point of death!), read the books, had them read aloud to me, listened HUNDREDS (literally) of times to the Focus on the Family Radio Theatre drama's...Narnia is pretty much the symbol of my life. Pluse Peter from the old BBC's was my first movie crush. ;)

  7. I was already going to mention my love for Narnia, but after reading your comment to Emily Ann, I need to chime in at greater length than originally planned. My brothers and I are huge Narnia nerds! I read the books countless times (being the bookworm of the group) and together we listened to the Focus on the Family Radio Dramas over and over... and over. We wore out the cassettes a long time ago, but the cd's are still fairly usable. :D I loved them all, but The Horse and His Boy usually takes its place as my favorite. And the BBC movies! Oh man, my sibs and I were JUST talking about those the other day... good times! As far as other fantasy books go, I also love Ella Enchanted, Redwall, Beauty, and The Hobbit. I'm ashamed to admit that homeschooled, nerdy, book-lover, that I am, I still haven't read The Lord of the Rings. I like the movies, and know I'll love the books, but you gotta save some things to read in the future, right? :D

    1. Taylor, you sound quite like me! C.S. Lewis should have a star in Hollywood, since he's impacted so many with his incredible (and insightful!) Chronicles of Narnia! I kid you NOT when I say that I can literally quote for you both the BBC movies AND the FOTF Radio dramas...complete with voices, tone inflection and background sound affects. :) All the books you mention are ones that I have read, own and love! And you know...it's okay to not have read the LOTR books yet! They are quite a huge chunk to bite off! But you have to do it someday. :)

  8. Oh girl, I can so relate to this. I have been wanting to read Narnia for a while now (I know I can't believe I haven't read it either). And I am a HUGE Harry Potter fan. i will never grow out of that. I can't put my finger exactly on what I love so much about it, but I just do. The whole HP experience truly is magical. So obviously, I choose that for my answer, hah! I would most definitely bring the whole Harry Potter world to life and learn spells and just be awesome hangin' out with Harry and the crew ;)

    1. ATTENTION: the Following Comment to Julie Contains Spoilers as to the Ending of the Harry Potter Saga. ADVANCE WITH CAUTION IF YOU HAVE NOT YET READ THEM! :)

      ----

Julie, Julie...you MUST read Narnia! There is something very special about those books. They're deeper than they look at first glance, yet still maintain a lovable level in innocence and charm! When HP first came out, I was adamantly against them (you know, "witchcraft" and all that), but after a few years (or actually, like a decade...*old moment*) I finally decided to check them out for myself....and fell in love with them! I confess to not being AS big on the last three books after Goblet of Fire, it just gets so frustrating, sad and dark after that (engorgio! at Umbridge! *grin*) and I adamantly hold to the persuasion that Fred Weasely should not have died. Period. End of Story. Percy? He could have gone out of life with dignity, since he reformed at the very end...but Fred?? It was just wrong. Way. Too. Wrong. Anyways...thanks for you're lovely comment and I'm glad to find another HP fan! :)

  9. I really can't decide who I'd be in the fantasy realm, but Stephen and I are reading through the Chronicles of Narnia aloud, and we're loving it! Always been a huge fan of the books and movies, but it brings a whole new approach as an adult!
Keep these wonderful blogs coming my friend:-)

  11. I laughed out loud at your moment of silence. :-P Last week at community group (church midweek) we were praying and there was a pause in between pray-ers. You could hear the crickets chirping outside the window and I just thought that was so funny!

  12. Oh! I forgot to answer the question! I think possibly the trees coming to life and sending messages like in Narnia. Couldn't you imagine it? The almond blossoms blowing about in the wind and you knowing they were alive?

    1. Oh wow. I'd never actually thought of it that way! Yes, the trees coming to life would be amazing! I've always found the nature spirits fascinating - the dryads and naiads and such. :)

  13. So...all these words in your post...it's like you took them from my heart and made them into words. Just...YES. This is exactly how I feel!! Fantasy is my heart's passion.

Now, as to bringing to life one fantasy person/creature well... Meep. I've thought about this SO often and I can never decide. There is just waaaaaay too many characters I love! Does the Doctor count? Because I think he is my favorite fictional character, though he's not a "fantasy" character. Ugh. I have no idea. I love too many fantasy things.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Ah, Laurie, I though for SURE you'd say elves! :D And whereas The Doctor is a little bit more like sci-fi...I'll give it to you. Just because the Doctor IS amazing. ;)

      Delete
    2. Lol! Actually, the second I saw the question my mind went, "ELVES!" But then I was thinking you meant something more like a specific character instead of an entire race. Hee. There's just so many good characters out there!

I get the Doctor. YAY! I'll keep him safe, I promise. ;D

      Delete
    3. Actually...an entire race totally was what I was going for! I guess I really didn't word my question very well! So just because you're a fantasy lover like me, I award you the distinction of getting to pick elves AND the Doctor. ;)
