Thursday ~ Sunshine And How a Bag of Potatoes Reduced Me to Tears

I'd like to announce that I've now survived two nights at my new place. The first night I had my sister Katheryn with me for moral support (and I'm not ashamed of it!) and last night I went solo. And it was a pretty uneventful night's sleep, despite waking up freezing cold and realizing that I couldn't just go grab a blanket from the blanket cupboard...because I don't have a blanket cupboard.

I've already found an unexpected blessing in my new room. It faces the sunrise! Now, I'm usually a sunset kind of gal, but sunrises have their own kind of beauty. And at 7am in the morning while I'm getting ready for work, having that cheery warm sun flooding my room is like a special "good morning" from God.

My two zebras have been given places of honor in my room. Hopefully you know by now that I love zebras and these guys are special to me. The "mommy zebra" (above) was given to me by dad two Christmas's ago and the "baby zebra" (below) was given to me this past Christmas by my 13 year old brother, Stuart. Who's also building me a model TARDIS for my desk.

Yes. Be jealous.

My amazing friend Brea gave me the little chalkboard photo-frame (barely seen next to the little zebra) last week. It was my first house-warming gift. She said it's for me to write inspiring bible verses/quotes on and that's exactly what I plan to do with it. Once I remember to bring the chalk to my new house, haha.

Yesterday, I confess to being somewhat on the depressed side as I got home from work. I was in a hurry because I was running late for babysitting my niece and nephew, I was tired, emotional, hungry, and my house had no food in it yet...and I just wanted to go home. "Home" being Home-with-a-capital-H-where-my-family-is. As I ran from my car up to the door (none of my house-mates where home yet), I saw in the alcove next to the front door...three big bags of groceries. I was confused as to who's they were...until I saw the package of Keebler's Coconut Dreams. My favorite cookie. And I knew they were specially for me. From my sister Katheryn.

And I promptly starting crying.

Because she's just amazing that way. My whole family is. And I love them so much

Inside the grocery bags, were not just several of my favorite guilty pleasures (pop tarts, Arizona teas, Coconut Chocolate Chip Cliff bars, jello, etc), but there was also a glorious supply of kitchen staples - flour, baking soda, baking powder, butter, even a big bag of potatoes. All the stuff needed to start my new home. I pretty much cried while I carried all the bags in and began putting all those treausres away.

Then I went and picked up my niece and nephew...and took them Home. And I hung out at Home with my family and it felt like nothing had really changed. Yes, I live somewhere else...but the thing that really matter haven't changed. I still dumped my purse into "our" room, still talked to mom about my day, still got my "TARDIS update" from Stuart, still sat on the floor of "our" room with my two sisters, talking and laughing while I did my nails. I know over time the change will  become wider in some places, but I know where it really matters it's going to stay the same.

Because whereas a lot may change in my life...I love my family.

And that will never change.

  1. I love the pictures! I seriously want to see more pictures of this new place of yours :) It's so sweet to see how you are making it your own.
I'm so glad you have such amazing family to support in this new venture of yours! And you're right...even though we grow up or get married or have babies or move out, family is still the same. We're both so blessed with such healthy relationships with our families. It's a huge comfort for sure!

    1. I can't wait to POST more pictures of my room! Right now it's just the "rough draft" of the room, since I don't even have a bed yet or my desk, which I'll by in a few weeks, when the paychecks come around again, haha. Nothing in it is final, so I can't actually do anything permanent yet (ie. hang pictures). Can't wait to see it progress over the next few weeks! I've actually barely spent any time in it, since I've either been working or gone! :)

We are both so blessed with amazing families! I honestly can't imagine leaving and not having their support. Especially my dad's. But everyone's been so amazing, even to my 13 year old brother Stuart chanting with me "who can do? you/I can!" as we moved me out of the house Tuesday night!

    1. Thanks for commenting, Hayden! That's so cool that you have a model TARDIS, too! And thank you, yes, I am beginning to settle in. Slowly. I could settle in faster if I was actually at the House more I'm trying to settle into! :)

  3. Ok I admit it! I cried when I read about the groceries!! Sounds like something that MY amazing family would do, and have done, in other ways!! We are so blessed to have such amazing families.. I know we don't *know* each other, but I am proud of what your doing! I can't imagine how exciting, scary and crazy everything is right now!! You are an inspiration to me for sure!!! I hope you have a most blessed day!

    1. I'm glad I'm not the only one so easily reduced to tears! And thanks so much for your encouraging words and support! It doesn't matter to me that we don't "know" each other, it encourages me all the same! It's a big step and a lot of uncharted territory, but I've got my family at my back and my God at my side, so I think I'll be able to handle. Even though at times it will be through tears! You have a lovely day, too!

    1. Thanks, Vicki! Wow, needlepointing? How long does that take you?? I fear needlepoint and I would not get along very well! I'm sure there will be pictures of my TARDIS when it's all done. Stuart is not letting me see it until it's all finished. :D

    1. Thanks, Rissi! This is my first time getting to plan a room and it's decorations from scratch, so it's a lot of fun! It'll be awhile until it's complete, but I'm slowly working on even just getting some pictures and printables ready for being hung when I get all my furniture in and into place! :)

  8. I keep meaning to comment and tell you how amazing and exciting it is you're venturing out into a house of your own. I can totally understand how scary and hard it is leaving your Home (definitely capital H there) and family, but what an adventure you've embarked on! I demand we get more pictures of your house. ;D Also, your brother is making you a model TARDIS? Can I just say, JELLY!!

Also also, I wanted to let you know I awarded you over at my blog here: http://musingsofanelf.blogspot.com/2013/04/brilliant-blog-bouquet-award.html Definitely nothing you have to do! I just wanted to pass it on over to you.

I pray your new, scary, and exciting adventure will only become smoother and you'll enjoy living in a new house. Blessings!

  9. So so precious! I feel the same way about Home. I live at school during the week but when I come home on weekends it feels like I didn't even spend a week away! Your family sounds so sweet and God is so good and amazing to remind you that you are loved by those bags of groceries! :)

    1. Megs, well, you know....I try. ;) I think I've only read Five Little Peppers & How They Grew, but I read and re-read it growing up! I confess to a terrible book-crush on Jasper. I even named one of my boy dolls Jasper and vowed at the time that one day I would name one of my sons Jasper. Although I must admit that that name was crossed off the list quite a few years ago. ;)

  11. Beautifully written! I love the distinction between your new home and Home. I always will talk to my husband about Home and he doesn't understand it...maybe it's because his Home is 5 hours away, or maybe just as women we are way more attached? Not sure...but I will always call it Home. :)

    1. Quite so, Angela! I don't know if I could EVER call Home just "Mom and Dad's place" - that just seems to wipe away and make nothing of the all the memories and incredible specialness of that place! It will always be Home in my mind! I think, in many ways, that women may as a general rule be more attached - after all, God did create us with a natural instinct for Homes and Hominess! Either way, my place now will be home-with-a-lower-case-h and then there will be Home-with-the-capital-H. :)

  12. Oh Kellie, I know the feelings you have! It reminds me a lot of when I lived in the dorms for a short time freshmen year. I had some of those same exact feelings and I was also only a short drive away (thank goodness for that!).

And I love how you distinguished between home and Home. There will always be homes, but there will always only be one Home. And hooray for family and thoughtful sisters! I'm sure I would be all tears, too if I found a bags of my favorite food in my new home!

Congrats on your new place! Those zebras are adorable. :)
