Tuesday ~ Civil War Reenactment Sneak Peek

Between my mom and me, we probably took about a thousand pictures of this past weekend's Civil War reenactment. And you're welcome in advance for not posting them all, although it will be hard to try to narrow it down to a manageable amount that won't have you all suffering from Civil War overload.

Since I know some people are waiting for pictures (and there are some amazing ones I'll be posting later!), here's just a sneak peek at what my life was like the past few days.

This morning, though...my life is aching limbs, droopy eye-lids and an emergency Starbucks run. Because that's what best reenactment ever does to me.

Sorry for the slightly over-saturated shots, I don't have my normal editing software handy right now so I had to fallback on cheap edits. But I couldn't wait any longer to at least share a few pictures with you. I'll be posting more throughout the week in different installments as I work my way through post-processing them all. No, not the whole thousands...but definitely a few. Or several dozen.

Happy Tuesday, my friends, I hope that your three-day holiday was as amazing as mine! What did you do?

  1. Such great images! I felt like I stepped back in time. Really enjoyed them all :)
As for us, we spent time outside in this beautiful weather with family. I'm loving these gloriously sunny days!

    1. Thanks, Brea! There will be more coming! Civil War reenacting really is so much fun, there's so much community and camaraderie that comes with living in a soldiers map dressed up in old-style clothes with a group of other people! It's so far off the beaten track of the usual "hobbies" that it just lends itself to amazingness!

I love the sound of your weekend!! I'm loving the sunshine, too, although I'm not fond of the overly oppressive afternoon heat that summer days bring here! But it's worth it! :D

    1. I knew you'd appreciate this post, Emily, as you're a fellow reenactor. :) I'll be doing my best at getting a ton of photos out soon. Keep watch!

Thank you for the compliment on the design, I've had some people say they love it and some people say they really don't. But I like it (simple, cheerful, light colors - my favorites!) so that's what matters. ;)

  3. This would be so cool to go to!!! One question.....who plays the Yankees? Northerners?

    1. It is really awesome, Iris! Our organization is just made out of people interested in Civil War history. When you join the organization, you just pick which side you want to represent. We're Confederate/Southern/Rebel reenactors, so the Yankees/Northerners are just whoever as signed up to fight for the Union.

    2. Hahahaha....many southerners believe strongly in their cause so I couldn't see them signing up for the Yankees. :P

    3. Well, I don't actually live in the South and in fact, my state is more neutral although my guess would be if it HAD to have picked a side, it probably would have gone North anyway!

But yes, I bet that in the South it's harder to find people willing to fight for the Union. :)

  6. This is so amazing! I can't wait to see more... I honestly did not know there were such things until I found your blog. But now it's like my life goal to go to one. I think it would be so fun to participate in one!

    1. Have you tried looking for one in your area? You could probably just google Civil War Reenactment and you'd hopefully find one within driving distance! And I really think that you'd have a blast if you ever got to participate!

  7. Oh, wow! Kellie these are so great. Love how authentic you guys make these - you all really know how to do these re-enactments right. :) Good for you!

Looking forward to more "peeks" into this event.

    1. Being authentic is always the goal! Of course, after the public spectators leave...then all the "farb" (the code word for anything modern day) comes out. Most of the white tents in the background are full of ice chests, sleeping bags and all kinds of modern day camping gear, hehe. ;)

  8. How fun! I'm slightly envious because Civil War reenacting has always fascinated me (the history, the clothes, the other nerdy people... *sigh*), but my remote little part of Colorado doesn't have anything like it. Pictures are as close as I ever get, so thank you! :D

I had to work Saturday and Monday, but it was all made okay by the surprise engagement party that we threw for my cousin. He asked his girlfriend to marry him on Saturday afternoon and we had the party in the evening. Since he'll be the first one of "the cousins" to get married it was extra exciting and definitely made it a great weekend!

    1. Taylor, you're got it right - it IS so fun! Of course, for me as a reenacting Civil War civilian woman, all I have to do is wear big clothes and sit around. The guys, on the other hand, have to drill, march and fight in the battles. Both my brothers are in command positions of our unit, which is the 43rd Virginia {Dismounted} Cavalry. Seth (21) is Lieutenant and he actually leads the unit in battle and Scott (18) is First Sergeant, so their tasks are significantly more weighty. :)

Have you ever looked into participating? You can try googling any in your area and then go talk to people about the local organizations and how to join up. :)

A surprise engagement party?? That sounds like so much fun! It must have been the weekend for it, since there was a guy at the reenactment this weekend who proposed to his girlfriend in front of the entire reenacting group at the Sunday night dance. :)

The first ones to go are always the most exciting - but then, any engagement/happy ever after is always exciting, especially when it's people you're close to!! :)

  9. Yay!! I've been waiting for some pics. Since you did promise them. ;) Great shots! I thought about you several times over the weekend and wondered how things were going. Glad it was the best ever!

My weekend was low-key. Got some reading done. I've had a stack of library books that are getting close to being due. So I knew I'd better forgo Gone South until I'd read a few of them. Helped with a surprise 65th birthday party on Monday and also did some shopping. Just having the day off work was lovely though! I love long weekends. I could seriously deal just fine with having a three day weekend every week! :D

    1. Hehe, yes, Kara, I most certainly did promise and there certainly will be lots more photos!! And woman, you should have come! :D

Aaaaaah...your weekend sounds positively heavenly!! That's probably how I would have wanted to spend my weekend if I hadn't had the reenactment! Heheh, I hope you rush through those library books quickly so you can savor the joys of Gone South. :)

  13. Woohoo, loved the Civil War Reenactment photos! We have always enjoyed attending reenactments. Often we have talked of joining and reenacting as a family. But we never did. I would still like to though, someday. I have a good friend who is very involved in civil war reenacting and it is always such fun to hear about her adventures.

My weekend was amazing. We went on family Holiday up to our most favorite cabin in the remote Wild. We haven't been there in 7 years and it was a delight to see everything exactly the same. We were there 6 days and there was beach combing, a driftwood bonfire, fishing, rowing, bouldering, and just plain being together as a family.

    1. Hey, Holly! Thanks for leaving a long, chatty comment - I love it! Have you thought about going to a reenactment with your friend? Could she loan you an outfit for a day??

Oooh! A cabin get away sounds marvelous! My family actually does that about once a year, too, although it's usually more like 3 days instead of 6. :)
