Tuesday | The Opposite of Crazy and the Epitome of Slow

Sleeping in late because I staid up late watching a movie. Tsk tsk.

Reminders that life is NOW, not when all my dreams come true.

Maintaining perspective.

Toy box poised and ready. Ahem, for my nieces and nephews, mind you.

A brilliant read I can't wait to finish and review.

Grieving the highly dissatisfactory news regarding a favorite tv show.

Movie night tonight with my favorite people.

Emerald green toes.

Strange but tasty favorite snack.

  1. I'm reading Rules of Murder right now too! Love it! :)

By contrast it sounds like I am the complete opposite of you regarding the latest DW news... ;)

    1. Yay!! Glad you're liking Rules of Murder, I'm loving it!!

Soo....let's talk. :) So you're happy with the new casting of the Doctor? I'm not. I mean, I can see the appeal of casting him, if one is going with the more classic look of the Doctor from way back when. I perhaps am more keen on a younger (or at least younger looking) Doctor, whereas Peter Capaldi is far from young and worlds away from the most recent good-lookin' look. When I see Peter's face, I can see him portraying a brilliant Sherlock Holmes...but not a Doctor. But then, I still love Chris Eccleston as the Doctor, and he wasn't young nor good looking...so I know I just have to be willing to give him a try.

      But still...

    2. Rules is SO MUCH FUN. And the cover design? Definitely one of my favorites this year. :)

Yes, let's talk. :) Here's the thing...I've kinda had a thing for Capaldi for a few years now, ever since seeing him in Torchwood: Children of Earth and season two of The Hour (may that show rest in peace). Yeah, he's older, but not *old* in that I think he brings a lot of energy and sly humor and intelligence to the screen...so I cannot WAIT to see what he does with the role of the Doctor. I've loved Eccleston, Tennant, and Smith all in their own way, though of those three Tennant is probably still my favorite. My hope for Capaldi is that he can bring his own energy to the role with a touch of the gravitas, the seriousness if you will -- the reminder of the Doctor's depth and the burdens he carries -- that I saw with Eccelston and Tennant (less so, or more sporadically maybe, with Smith). And then there's the fear I had that if the show kept skewing younger in its casting we'd end up with a pre-teen as the Doctor and that just wouldn't work for me at all. ;)

    3. I confess to only having seen Capaldi in "Fires of Pompeii," and I have seen him in another show, but I don't remember his character at all. And what I did see and remember, I'm not super impressed.

But I like the point that you make - someone older is probably better able to portray convincingly the "weight of the world" that the Doctor carries. And YES. A pre-teen as a Doctor would have been horrific in every way, as would a woman Doctor. It was hard enough trying to swallow the Matt Smith/River Song romance, it always felt so weird.

So, now after a few day's time to adjust, I'm more willing to at least give Capaldi a fighting chance. :)

    4. I'm glad you're accepting Capaldi. :P When I saw him, I was like, "whaaaaa?" but I'm honestly really warming up to him. I think he can do some really interesting things to the character, and bring, as Ruth said, some of the gravity that Eccleston and Tennant did that was a bit lacking, IMO, in the Smith era. It's what I loved about DW, and what I was a bit ticked over that it was getting too...I don't know, not as dark and angsty. :P

But still, there is a part of me that wishes he would have re-regenerated back into Tennant. :P

    5. Oh no no no...nothing in me wanted to have David Tennant back. Yes, he was a good Doctor and shall remain forever very iconic of Doctor Who...but where's the fun of having the SAME Doctor back? :)

Yes, time is altering my initial horror and I'm growing more intrigued to see Capaldi's interpretation of the Doctor. :)

  2. Loove those shoes! And I've been wanting to watch Wreck it Ralph, I think I just might have to rent it. Enjoy your movie night :)

Oh do go rent it! Or buy it. It's one of my favorites from this past year, so cute, charming, clever and really touching. :)

  3. Explain yourself, Kellie. You can't just make a vague statement about that most earth shattering (and heart-rending) announcement and not elaborate on why you don't like it. Personal dislike of the actor? Anyone would have been unsatisfactory (just 'cuz, you know, Matt is awesome)? I need to discuss with someone other than my brothers (who don't have quite the passion that I do for this show...). :-). Oooh, and I LOVE that book cover. Looking forward to your review!

    1. Haha....I can always count on you, Taylor, for some good sci-fi talk! :D

I've only seen Capaldi in a few things, which of course includes when he played that guy from Pompeii in a previous DW episode, but even then, I still didn't like him as an actor. He looks like a bad guy, haha. :)

I had heard rumors of Tom Hiddleston or even Rupert Grint (probably just fan talk, but still) and I was ferociously voting against either of those too. But I'd have taken both (even Rupert!) over Peter Capaldi. I mean, not to be cruel, but his face?? Ahem, there's not very many redeeming features in that face.

Anyways, I need to perhaps go back and watch that Pompeii episode and track down a few other movies/shows have Capaldi is in, so I can reacquaint myself with him. But when I googled his name and his picture popped up...I was in stunned silence. But only for a short time, then I started talking in my I'm Not Happy voice for a long time. :D

    2. I've never actually seen him in anything other than "The Fires of Pompeii", but you're totally right - he does have a sinister look about him. I think that it's his massively beak-like nose... my little sis (who hasn't even seen the show yet) freaked out when she saw a picture of him. She wailed out several phrases that basically amounted to, "He's soooo old, and creepy looking, and I don't want to start watching the show and have *him* to look forward to." :-)

You crack me up, Kellie. "Not very many redeeming features in that face." Hehe. Well, that may be true, but I need to confess that Matt was originally so funny looking to me that I was stubbornly prejudiced against him - based only on his face. David was dreamy, and I could not for the life of me get past the awkwardness that is Matt Smith. But then I sat down, watched half of an episode and found that I had fallen... hard. Hopefully Capaldi can do the same thing - in an older sort of way. I'm ready to give him a chance. :-)

I wouldn't have objected to Hiddleston (because his voice alone makes me swoon), but I think that relatively unknown actors are better for the show. *ahem* I'm looking at you, Sherlock, and all of your highly sought after actors whose schedules keep us waiting FOREVER for a new season. Also, the casting choices for the past 3 incarnations of the Doctor were fantastic, so I choose to have faith again. And to be honest, after reading rumor upon dreadful rumor, I was just thrilled that they didn't cast a woman. I would definitely have had to boycott the show then... it would just rip my heart out to see such a major and ghastly change in *my* show. Overreaction about a something as trivial as a TV? Maybe. My true thoughts on the matter? Yes. :D

    3. HAHA! I love your sister's response, mine may have been right along those same lines! I was finally gearing up to just breaking down and buying S7 Part 2, because I am soo tired of being one of the ONLY ONES to doesn't know what has happened and I was seriously about to go buy it on Sunday. Then I heard the news. And now I'm almost wanting to draw out the lovely pleasure of half a season that still has Matt Smith's adorable face in it, since all I have after that bit is...Peter Capaldi to anticipate.

Haha, and I find myself agreeing with you! Matt's face DID take a bit of getting used to and for a while I didn't think that I would ever be able to fully embrace him as my Doctor. But once again like you, he won me over completely!!

Now that I've had more time to process this horrific announcement, I'm more ready to give Capaldi a shot at it. Yes, the whole theme of Doctor Who will be changed, but if I keep Chris Eccleston in mind...maybe (big maybe) I can come to appreciate an older Doctor again.

My objection to Hiddleston was that he's already SO big in the tv world. Yes, I adore him as an actor, but for the Doctor? I definitely like someone who's no main stream. I don't want to see the Doctor and think (for example) "oh, this is Loki playing the Doctor," or something else like that. :) So, I was voting for someone little known and obscure. When my friend texted me the name "Peter Capaldi" I was initially excited, because it wasn't a name that I recognized. That excitement died an unbecoming death the moment I googled his name.

Haha, yes...perhaps we protest much, but come on...it IS the Doctor. Some things are worth fighting for. After all, think of all the times he's fought for us, right? ;)

  4. Whoops. I was trying to comment between customers at work and missed your response to Ruth. I can see where you're coming from... And I sort of agree. I think it'll be interesting to see an "older" Doctor though.

    1. True, quite true. And Chris Eccleston wasn't a spring chicken himself...although Capaldi's like, what, 60?? That's pushing it for me!!

    2. I believe he's 55... So yeah. Kind of grandfatherly, huh? I'll be back after I get off work with a few more words. :-)

    3. Not trying to be the huge Capaldi defender :P, but he's not THAT old. David was forty by the time he finished his run. Hehe. And maybe he'll be all craggy-ishly attractive, like Hugh Laurie is now, or something. :P

  6. Hello, Kellie! I was delighted to see a blog post from you on my dashboard today, girl. :) Looks as if you are staying busy.

Oh. My. Word. There is actually someone else who is not wild about this new DW casting!? Right on. You know I didn't necessarily require a "young" actor in the same age bracket of Matt Smith but... hmm... just not sure I am liking the idea of this dude having the role that was first introduced to me by Matt. So yeah... pretty leery of continuing the Doctor Who franchise once I am done with Eleven's years. We'll see.

Anxious for your review of 'Rules.' Going to be reading that one also. :)

    1. Ah, your opinion of the new Doctor does my heart good! When I first saw the news, I was convinced that the entire Doctor Who fandom was rising up in shock, horror and protest right along with me. Imagine my shock when I found out that there are people who are actually very excited about him playing the role of our beloved Doctor! Everyone is more than free to have their own opinion and therefore, I am also most definitely free to have my own and my opinion is not in favor of an old man with some strangely unique facial features as my newest Doctor to look forward to. I'm really going to miss Matt Smith! He took some getting used to after a long stint with David Tennant but he quickly won me over and I love his portrayal of the Doctor.

So now, it's been three days since the big announcement and I've had time to adjust and process the earth-shattering news and I find myself more willing to give him a try. But I'll confess that I'll go into it determined to dislike him. :)

  8. Ha! I'm not entirely sure about the new Doctor either, but I will hold off on judging him.....fully, I have already started the judging, his old man neck bugs me.....but we shall just have to wait and see!

Wreck it Ralph is an amazing movie, I loved it! =)

  10. Normally, I'm not a green fan, but that emerald color is beautiful (especially paired with those sandals!). And Wreck it Ralph was such a cute movie. I kind of related it to modern day's Toy Story. Did you like it?

p.s. I spy Golden Books! Girl, you are one awesome aunt. :)

    1. It does have a Toy Story-esque feel to it! I've seen it several times before but several of my family members had not seen it, which made it extra fun to watch again. We're all quoting it now of course, as any good, self-respecting family should. ;)

I love Golden Books! The more vintage, the better! And not because "vintage" is cool...because I genuinely appreciate the simplicity and charm of an older book. :)

  11. With all the crazy conjecture floating around about who the next Doctor could be, I had finally reconciled myself to liking whomever they chose, as long as it was NOT a female. Nevertheless I was a little shocked that they picked an 'older' actor (although 55 isn't ancient). After the initial and,(I think) natural wish that it was a younger, good-looking chap, I determined to like Peter Capaldi as the Doctor. After all they have made excellent choices with Christopher E., David Tennant, and Matt Smith. Nevertheless I do find myself wondering at the choice since the intent with reviving the Doctor Who show was to spruce it up with updated storylines, better cgi and graphics, and younger actors to draw in a different fan base.
However now that a little time has passed wondering at that odd move on the part of the director, producers, etc., I can see P.C. playing the part and I am looking forward to his rendition of it in series 8.
But I will say that I have held off watching the very last episode of Series 7, pt. 2. Because the times we will see Matt Smith as Eleven are becoming very severely limited....And I will miss Eleven. Very much. *cue violent weeping*
