Tuesday | Announcement: The Red(shirts) Are Coming

Two things you should know about me: 1) I don't wear red and 2) I don't wear khakis.

My longstanding animosity towards khakis dates back to my days with a  traveling ministry where I couldn't wear denim during working hours. Oh the agony. The red shirt thing started in the past few years when I was obligated to wear red shirts every Friday to work because there was one person in the office who took patriotism to the next level. Please note that I am patriotic, but I'd rather display my love of country from the safety of a blue or white shirt.

Combine those two and you would find nary an item of red or khaki inside my wardrobe. My Gryffindor t-shirt with the red sleeves doesn't count. I just don't do red and I certainly don't do khaki.

So, you want to know why this is so funny? Because I'm now a Target employee. And pray tell, what is the obvious wardrobe of the Target employee? Yes, you got it - red and khaki. The irony of it all. And so I had to go spend the last of my life savings on two kinds of clothes that I abhor with a blazing passion of a thousand super nova's.

But take comfort in this, my friends, that even though I'm now doomed to a stint in the Dreadful Color Duo, I am quite prepared to do it with class, style and some seriously cute outfits. Where there's a will, there's a way. :)

So, yes, I got a job at Target and I'm scheduled to start tomorrow. Nope, in case you were wondering, Target was NOT my first choice but sometimes you just can't be picky. Although I'd have had to be out of a job for at least another 6 months before I'd have even considered any form of fast food. Shudder.

Anyways, so I'm actually the assistant to the manager of the food department, or as my official title is, "PA Assistant." Whatever that means. So I'll not be running the cashier or hanging up clothes, but running inspections, overseeing the food (ie. looking at food all day, what more could I ask?) and general "assisting" the foods manager. Kinda cool, huh? I'm excited about the opportunity to learn something new, but I'm growing increasingly more depressed at jumping on board a job that requires working crazy shift hours (ie. nights and weekends).

It's only temporary until I can find a job more along the lines of what I'm looking for and enjoy, but as far as retail work goes, it could be worse. Well, I'm not sure if my required work attire could be worse, but I can get over that. I never thought I'd say this but I'll give credit to Walmart for at least having blue (also known as my favorite color) as their slogan color.

So wish me luck, everyone! Thank you for all your prayers and kind thoughts as I've been job hunting the past month and a half! God has seen me through in so many ways and I'm so grateful.

  1. I just want to tell you how proud I am. I am surprised by our generation who feel above certain jobs. I have been in your shoes before, and I have taken a job that I really wouldnt wish on anyone else to pay the bills while I kept looking for the right job. And you know what? It came along and I paid the bills in the mean time!! Good for you! And good luck! Although its not perfect, I always tell people, you are much more desirable to employers if you have a job!

    1. Ah, thanks for that commendation, Brittany! My dad is a man of strong work ethic and he trained us up to work hard and not lag behind. I'm very grateful for that!

  2. I'm not a red shirt and khakis fan myself, haha. God's blessings on your new job and on finding a job more along the lines of what you're looking for.(:

  4. CONGRATS, Kellie. I figured this was your news. Happy and excited for you - just think of all the fun Target stuff you can now get. Despite the red and khaki thing. ;)

    Best of luck!

    1. Thanks, Rissi! I'm excited about actually starting this afternoon, although as anybody is as the begin something new, just a wee bit nervous! ;) I'm crossing my fingers that my "cute" pair of khakis will come in the mail today before I have to leave for work. If not, I guess it's my "Plan B" khakis! ;)

  5. Yay for answered prayers!! I'm so happy for you, friend. Hope this transition goes as smoothly as possible for you.

I can relate to the shift-craziness (my last job was at Home Depot - and I had no real semblance of routine whatsoever), though, and I'll be praying it doesn't throw you off too bad.

Something else funny? Home Depot was definitely not my first choice for a job, either, and orange is NOT my color. But...I guess fashion doesn't matter too much when you really need a job. :D

    1. Thank you, Rachel! And thank you for all your prayers!

True that! I'm going to have a whole new appreciation for the red shirts now, seeing as how I'll want to have a bunch of them in order to maintain some variety in my working wardrobe!

I'm really hoping that my work schedule with Target MIGHT turn out to be something a little bit more predictable, but somehow I doubt that will happen. Oh well. The Lord knows my heart and He already knows the plans He has for me. :)

    1. Ah, so you're one with the red and khaki already! If you have any tips for "red and khahki but CUTE," please pass them on. ;)

Here's hoping that you can find a job soon, too!! It's depressing stuff, job hunting is.

  7. Congrats on the job!!
Haha, I know exactly how you feel having had to rush out and buy my own khaki and black pants (both of which I HATE!) to go with my unflattering uniform polos! Though mine are blue and purple, so at least I don't have to wear red every day! =)

    1. Ah, a kindred spirit in thee I find!! I'd rather have had black over khaki, but oh well. I get a cool job (assistant head-hancho of food!) so I guess I shouldn't complain too much. I really am so grateful the Lord has given me this opportunity to keep making money and supporting myself!

Congrats on the job girl! I loveeeeee Target... Hope you can keep your paychecks from just going back there. It would be a challenge for me. Even though red and khaki aren't your faves I bet they look great on you!

    1. Haha! Angela, that thought has crossed my mind!! I'll have to be super careful to not use up my paychecks there!

But hey, Christmas shopping should be so much easier. ;)

  10. Congratulations on the new job!!!! I'll be praying for you as you set of in this new Nights-and-weekends-red-and-khaki Adventure!
My sister-in-law is quite fond of Target, I go on jaunts there with her often. Personally the sole reason I go there is to stalk their cute clearance socks. All sorts of wild colors and patterns.
I have hedgehog socks. Fox socks. Neon Argyle socks. Polka dot socks. Zebra striped socks. All in fantastical colors. Yep. Target is officially my favorite place to get ankle and knee socks. :)
When I went to help out a family with 4 little boys my socks were one of the Nine Wonders of the World, I do believe. They had to look at my feet every morning to see what new and mysterious creation I had on next. :)

    1. Thank you, Holly!

I used to get socks there, too! I usually limited my selections to argyle and polka-dot styles, but I remember them having a nice selection of fun socks, too!

  13. I don't like red & khaki either - red on it's own can be great, but khaki...ugh.

    I'm sure you'll do great!
    God bless you!

  14. Congratulations on the new job! I worked at Target for a year back when I was sixteen. It was my first job, and I actually enjoyed it a lot. Red and khaki isn't my favorite duo either, but I did have a lot of fun making the outfits as cute as I could. One of my favorites was a red Columbia fleece with a Swedish sweater pattern down the sides...it was adorable! One piece of advice...you spend a ton of time on your feet so make sure you have a very comfortable pair of shoes. :) Nearly all of my friends (and siblings) have worked retail at some point in their lives, and I think everyone should. It gives you a window into being on the other side of merchandise...and how to be a much more thoughtful shopper. :) When I wander through the clothing in Target, I still find myself straightening the clothes on the rack or folding shirts!

    1. Thanks for the types, you Target alumni you! :) I'm the first in my family to work retail, so it's a new beginning for us (and me!) and I actually am excited about it. My last job was a very stationary, social-Siberia and it got really lonely. At least now I'll get to interact with people. :)

  15. Girl, you are definitely going to rock the red and khaki! I only know this because I love all of the pieces in your closet. :) Congrats on the job, too! I'm excited for you and while this isn't your first choice of jobs, working at Target probably has its benefits (right?). I mean, at least now you can be one of the first to see the new clothing (and clearance!) items! :)

  16. So happy you found a job! And I love Target, so I definitely see that as a plus for a temporary job. I wish we had a Target around where I live! Also, about khaki and red. I love red, no problem with it! However, khaki is another story. We wore uniforms in high school, so it was khaki and royal or dark blue...for 4 years. Ugh. I have not worn a pair of khakis since graduating! 6 years and counting! :)
Congrats again on your job! :)

    1. No Target where you live? So sad, Jess! Yeesh, I can totally see why you wouldn't want to wear khaki!! After working at Target, I'll probably be equally un-fond of it! :)

  17. Awww, I'm so happy you found a job! ^_^ I've been praying for you, girl. I hope it goes wonderfully for you over at Target. It's a great store. Sadly, my town does not even have a Target so I don't get the chance to go there often.

And I totally get you with the red shirt thing! I don't think you can find one in my wardrobe either. Red just doesn't like me very much. But you're so gorgeous I have no doubt you'll look fabulous in all that red!

I'm definitely going to give a go at rockin' the red and khakis! I've seen some girls pulling it off quite nicely, so I'm going to try and be one of those girls. ;)
